Are wooden homes safe in Indian weather?
Heat, monsoon, termites and snow: how NESCA's timber systems are engineered for India's climates.
- Moisture
- Termites
- Heat
- Snow and earthquakes
Yes, when they are engineered for it. NESCA spent more than three years in R&D with Canadian Wood on timber systems for Indian conditions, and has since built from heavy-snow sites in Ladakh to the humid Maharashtra coast.
- Moisture. Timber is kept off the ground on a stone or concrete base, detailed for ventilation and drainage, and protected from driving rain by overhangs and cladding.
- Termites. Structural timber is treated, ground contact is designed out, and NESCA works with Rentokil PCI for pre- and post-construction treatment. Inspection is part of the maintenance plan.
- Heat. Framed walls carry insulation and a ventilated cavity, which is why timber homes stay cooler than solid masonry in the afternoon sun.
- Snow and earthquakes. The Zojila guest house in Ladakh is engineered for snow load and seismic action. Timber's strength-to-weight ratio is an advantage in both.
Our designs follow IS 883 and NBC 2016 in India, and North American timber codes for overseas clients. We use certified, legally sourced Canadian softwood through our supply partners.
